Annual Posada Navideña
Saturday, December 17, 10:30 – 11:30am
A true Mexican and now Roslindale tradition – the Nativity re-enactment of Joseph and Mary seeking lodging. Come dressed warm and ready to carol for “Posada” or “Shelter” around the Village accompanied by Mariachi Estrella de Boston and expect to be greeted with goodies for the children, warm tamales, champurrado (hot chocolate) and other Mexican treats.
We will depart from Adams Park at 10:30am sharp to the participating businesses and end our celebration at the Roslindale Library where the Friends will greet us with books, piñatas and goodie bags for the kids. Everyone will also be able to decorate holiday ornaments with Maria Conte from 11am to noon. Check out a short video about Las Posadas. Please join us!

Volunteers Wanted
Are you looking for a way to get more involved with the Friends and the Roslindale community? We are looking for volunteers for a number of Friends’ and library programming, including staff and sorters for our upcoming yarn and book sales, new members for our decoration, renovation and race and inclusion committees, a chess coach and a leader for the English Conversation Group. Please view the position descriptions on VolunteerMatch. If you are interested in any of the positions, contact us at [email protected].
We want your yarn!
The Friends are accepting donations for our annual yarn and craft book sale, which will take place the first weekend in March. Drop off yarn, needles, fabric, project and tote bags, craft books and other crafting accessories at the library during business hours.
Immigrant Information Corner
Last April, Mayor Walsh launched Immigrant Information Corners at the Central Library in Copley Square and 24 neighborhood branches to provide information about resources and services available to help advance the well-being of the city’s immigrant residents. Patrons can now find free USCIS citizenship preparation information and materials at the Roslindale Library. Read more about this initiative here and drop by the corner the next time you come to the library.
Holiday Shopping with the Friends!
if you do any holiday shopping on Amazon.com, please consider registering with the Friends’ AmazonSmile account. For eligible purchases at AmazonSmile, the Friends will receive 0.5 percent of the purchase price. There is no additional cost to the Friends or to AmazonSmile customers. You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for donation” on their product detail pages. The shopping experience is identical to Amazon.com with the added benefit that the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate that percentage to the Friends! The percentage might seem minuscule, but this adds up if you are a regular Amazon customer who makes purchases several times a week or month, especially during the holidays.
Support the Roslindale Library Renovation Project!
We are running a letter writing campaign to make sure our elected officials keep the Roslindale Library renovation project on target by writing emails to them. We have already written the letter for you. All you have to do is fill in your contact information and click to send, or edit the letter to send a more personalized message.
To sign the letter, for more information about the project and how you can get involved, go to friendsofroslindalelibrary.org/renovation.
Books of the Month
Each month we feature themed book lists grouped for adults, teenagers/young adults, and children, and can be borrowed from the Roslindale Library!
Books about Holiday Traditions
Here is a list of books representing a wide variety of traditions, beliefs, and customs celebrated during the holiday season. This is just a small sampling of the hundreds of holiday books that can be borrowed from the library.
Books of the Year
Did you miss any of our book lists from this year? Click here to see all of them in one place to catch up!
Send us your book recommendations!
These book lists have been very popular and we will continue making them in the new year. Did you read a book that you would like Roslindale to know about? Let us know about it! It can be about any topic for any age group. We might include it in a future book list. Email your recommendations to [email protected].
Words of Wisdom
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more! – Dr. Seuss
Support the Friends
All the work we do for library programming, publicity and building improvements is done with support from the community. There are many ways to support the Friends, like making a donation, becoming a Friends member and even shopping on Amazon!
