“It is not only about Skin Color”
By Jasmine Hernandez Reyes
Our new president can do a lot to unite the country around racial tensions. Right now Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in the lead to become America’s next president. I hope that Donald Trump doesn’t win for presidency because he does not support immigrants including Latinos. I am Latino and I think it is unfair to discriminate against those who are not born in America.
According to an article written on the Huffington Post’s website entitled “9 Outrageous Things Donald Trump Has Said About Latinos” it states, “When award-winning Hispanic journalist Jorge Ramos attempted to ask Trump questions about his immigration stance during a press conference in Iowa, the presidential candidate refused to respond because he said Ramos had spoken out of term. As Ramos attempted to finish his question, security approached him and physically removed him, right before he was ejected from the conference, Trump told Ramos: “Go back to Univision.” On the way out a Trump supporter confronted the journalist, a U.S. Citizen, and said: “You were very rude. It’s not about you. Get out of my country.” Ramos was eventually allowed back into the press conference to ask his question.
Think about it. Would you want to elect a president that does not care about Latinos? I interviewed some of my classmates and my teacher and asked them, If you had to make a law against racism what would it be?
Shakilah Ashby, 6th Grader, who attends 826 Boston said, “Do not be racist to people you do not know because it might get you in serious trouble.”
African American and Caucasian people fighting is not the only form of racism. Rosie Jones 826 attender responded, “Everyone should have freedom of speech and be free to do what they want but there comes a time where not everything is joke. Some people get killed for being racist or even just for being black.” Mr. Witsil, 6th grade teacher said, “I think that what affects mostly our economy or the way we live, is actually how people live and yes I am talking about culture not about skin color. I mean if people live around people they know are going to be just like them for example hispanics with Mexicans etc. something like that it would work out. Sometimes it is only one person who causes fights. So I think that if you live with people that have your same culture, they might worry less about it.”
Overall, I hope Hillary Clinton is America’s next president because she stands for women’s rights and improving racial equality in America. She believes that “isms” of the world are not not only about skin color, but it can be about sex or gender, culture, class and of course race.
