We will discuss actress (and former Roslindale resident) Diane Guerrero's memoir and the current debate around immigration reform. Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just fourteen years old on the day her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. The Friends purchased limited copies of the book in both English and Spanish, which are available to borrow from the Roslindale library on a first-come, first-served basis. A Spanish translator will be available at the book discussion.

We will host a three-part discussion series on James Baldwin's classic about race in America. The Fire Next Time is a passionate exploration of race, religion and America’s destiny. Race in Boston Discussion Follow Up
We had over 120 people come out for our Race in Boston community discussion with Boston Globe Spotlight reporters Adrian Walker and Liz Kowalczyk. You can read the whole series on the Globe's website and join the conversation on Facebook. The Friends plan to follow up on some of the ideas that came out of the discussion and implement them into future programming. Stay tuned!
BPL Trustees Meeting
The BPL Trustees Meeting was held at the library on March 8. The Friends appreciate the food donations from Fornax, Boston Cheese Cellar, and the Village Market for the meeting.
Library Renovation Update
The Roslindale Branch library is scheduled to be renovated starting in late 2018. Our current renovation budget of $6.7M was established almost five years ago, and our community’s vision for our renovated branch has continued to evolve. The Friends now believe that an additional $3.5M would lead to a more strategic and comprehensive renovation that will take us much farther into the future. We are asking community members to let our city officials know we want increased funding. You can send an email directly to our public officials through our online letter campaign. Roslindale residents can send letters to Mayor Walsh and city councilors. (Click the links)
Annual Book Sale
The Annual Book Sale is coming May 2-5. The Member Preview sale is Wednesday, May 2, 5:30 - 8:30 pm. We will be raffling off a little free library again (see left), and teachers get 50% off on all the days. Please renew your Friends membership this month - the best deal in town! It will make things go faster at the Members Preview Sale plus it helps with our advocacy for the best building renovation possible. Please renew your membership on our website.
Read a Book, Suggest a Book, Review a Book
We maintain a wide variety of topical books in our race and inclusion mega reading list for adults, teens/young adults, and children. We also welcome any book suggestions, especially ones for teens and children, to add to this mega list, which is mostly comprised of titles recommended by community members like you! This book list is meant to be a community resource that encourages thoughtful conversation, education, and respect for diversity. Also, if you read any of the books listed and want to write a review, let us know. We will consider review submissions for publication in our newsletter and website. Send your book suggestions and reviews to [email protected].
Volunteers Wanted
We are looking for volunteers for a number of Friends' and library programming, including new members for our decoration, renovation, and race and inclusion committees. Please view the job descriptions on VolunteerMatch. If you are interested in any of the positions, contact us at [email protected].
Books of the Month
Each month we feature themed booklists grouped for adults, teenagers/young adults, and children, and can be borrowed from the Roslindale Library!

Words of Wisdom
One of the joys of reading is the ability to plug into the shared wisdom of mankind. — Ishmael Reed
