10 Things We Learned From Anthony Sammarco’s Lecture
Historian and author Anthony Sammarco was the guest speaker at this year’s annual meeting. His lecture was so rich in details that it is safe to say that all the attendees left the meeting learning something new!
If you missed it, here are some interesting Roslindale tidbits:
1. Roslindale is name after the town of Roslin in Scotland, which is known for its picturesque hills and farms.
2. Up until a hundred years ago, the Taft tavern and hotel was located in what is now Adams Park.
3. There used to be a firehouse where the Roslindale library is located now.
4. Roslindale first enjoyed library service in 1896 from a book delivery station at a local drug store on the corner of Washington and Ashland Streets.
5. About 750 people came to the opening of the Roslindale library in its current location in 1961.
6. Roslindale library used to have a “21st century summer reading club” for children, where they had to read 21 books.
7. Cummins Highway was named after Father Cummins, a priest at Sacred Heart Church.
8. The first man killed in World War I from Massachusetts was from Roslindale.
9. The clock on top of the Roslindale Congregational Church was donated by the city of Boston.
10. 50,000 people came to Roslindale just to see the Bussey Bridge train disaster in March 1887.
